Online Card Payment Integration: Stripe, Netopia or PayU?

Let your customers pay quickly and securely. We compare the best payment processors for online stores in Romania.

Online Card Payment Integration: Stripe, Netopia or PayU?

Stripe, Netopia or PayU? How to choose the right payment processor for your online store

If you are just starting an online store in Romania, one of the first technical decisions is: how will you process card payments? The answer isn’t simple, because Stripe, Netopia Payments and PayU work differently, charge different fees and suit different types of business.

I have integrated all three in real projects, and in this article I explain the practical differences, not just the ones in the documentation.

Why does the choice of payment processor matter?

The moment of payment is the most sensitive point in a customer’s journey. Studies show that between 60% and 70% of shopping carts are abandoned, and a complicated, slow or untrustworthy checkout is one of the main reasons.

A good payment processor means a fast checkout, a secure payment page (HTTPS, well-known logos), support for your customers’ preferred payment methods and automatic confirmation notifications.

Netopia Payments — the most popular in Romania

Netopia Payments (formerly mobilPay) is the market leader in online payment processing in Romania. If your store sells mainly to customers in Romania, Netopia is usually the first choice.

Netopia advantages:

  • Recognized and accepted by Romanian banks without friction
  • Native support for lei (RON), with no currency conversion
  • Direct integration with SmartBill and Oblio for automatic invoicing
  • Documentation in Romanian and local technical support
  • Accepted by Revolut, ING, BCR, BRD and all the major banks in Romania
  • Installment payments through partner banks

Netopia disadvantages:

  • The checkout interface looks less modern than Stripe’s
  • Account activation can take a few working days
  • Slightly higher fees than Stripe at high volumes
  • The API is older and less flexible for advanced integrations

Netopia fees: roughly 1.5%–2.5% per transaction, depending on monthly volume and card type. High volumes are negotiated directly with them.

Stripe — the international standard

Stripe is considered the best payment processor in the world from a technical point of view. It has an exceptional API and a modern checkout, and it supports more than 135 currencies. Since 2022 it has been fully available to companies in Romania.

Stripe advantages:

  • An extremely modern checkout with card details autofill
  • Native support for Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • A very well documented API that is easy to integrate into any platform
  • Stripe Radar — an advanced fraud detection system included
  • A complete dashboard with detailed reports and CSV export
  • Ideal for international sales and subscription-based SaaS
  • Stripe Billing for automatic recurring invoicing

Stripe disadvantages:

  • Some older Romanian banks may occasionally block payments (rarer in 2026)
  • Technical support is in English only
  • Money initially reaches your account with a 2–7 working day delay
  • No native integration with Romanian invoicing systems

Stripe fees: 1.5% + €0.25 per transaction for European cards. For non-European cards, the fee rises to 3.25% + €0.25.

PayU — the solid alternative

PayU has a strong presence in Romania and Eastern Europe. Many large Romanian online stores use it, and it has a high transaction approval rate.

PayU advantages:

  • A high approval rate for transactions on Romanian cards
  • Installment payments (PayU Finance)
  • Integration with eMAG Marketplace and other Romanian platforms
  • Technical support in Romanian

PayU disadvantages:

  • The longest onboarding process of the three
  • A less modern API than Stripe’s
  • Less transparent fees, negotiated individually

Which one should you choose for your store?

Choose Netopia if: you sell exclusively or mainly in Romania, run a classic retail store, and want local technical support and easy integration with Romanian invoicing.

Choose Stripe if: you sell internationally or plan to, have a SaaS or digital product with subscriptions, want the most modern checkout possible, or need a flexible API for complex integrations.

Choose PayU if: you have a high transaction volume and want to negotiate fees, or you sell on eMAG Marketplace and want a unified integration.

Use both (Stripe + Netopia) if: your store has customers both in Romania and abroad. This is the solution I recommend most often — Netopia as the main processor for Romania and Stripe for international payments and Apple/Google Pay.

How much does integrating a payment processor cost?

At GabrielDev, integrating a payment processor (Netopia, Stripe or PayU) is included in the price of an online store. You don’t pay extra for the technical implementation, full testing of the payment flow and setting up IPN/webhook notifications.

If you already have an online store and want to add or change your payment processor, contact me for an estimate. A new integration usually takes 1–3 working days, depending on the existing platform.

Frequently asked questions about online payments

Can I use Stripe in Romania? Yes. Since 2022 Stripe fully supports companies registered in Romania. You need a bank account in EUR or RON and your company documents.

Do I need a company to accept online payments? Yes. All payment processors require a legal entity — an SRL or a PFA. Private individuals cannot accept card payments for commercial activity.

How long does it take to receive the money? With Netopia: 1–3 working days. With Stripe: 2–7 days initially, then daily after the first 30 days.

What happens if a customer files a chargeback? The processor holds the disputed amount until the dispute is resolved. Stripe and Netopia have clear dispute procedures, and I always set up the notification system so you are alerted immediately.
